@Mysticial well, they're optimized for cache locality not ram, but still it'd be terrible to run a regular FFT over hard disk. There are different specific algorithms for that especially if it's a hard disk and not an SSD (cc @Mikhail ) - again I think FFTW can actually deal with disk explicitly.

@BenjaminGruenbaum Abstractly, the ram/disk barrier is the same as cache/ram, but with everything magnified. So the algorithms that work well on disk will also work well in memory.

@sehe most of these algorithms optimize cache aggressively and not CPU actions (well, at least the interesting ones :P).

@sehe I should say, "greatly" magnified. The algorithms that work on memory/disk will also work well on cache/memory. But not the other way around.

Of course using a memory/disk algorithm for cache/memory won't give you the same performance as something designed for cache/memory, but it will get you within a constant factor of it. (IOW, the asympotics are the same.)

@Lalaland the advantage is that it's the one in books like Cormen IIRC, the disadvantage is that implementing these things yourself tends to be insanely hard if you expect reasonable performance.

@Mysticial fair. In my mind "magnified" implies similar "shapes", and that won't be the case (some things get amplified orders of magnitudes more, resulting in different shapes). Indeed going from disk to RAM your rule-of-thumb holds,

@BenjaminGruenbaum Well, memory can't "completely" be read in random order. Depending on the granularity which you're working at, demand-based cache misses will get you a similar effect to disk seeks.

@Mysticial Yes, I guess that's also true, although in most papers I've read an assumption that io reads are uniform is made or an explicit mechanism is described (like a binary tree broadcast). I'm not sure how that translates to ram though.
