I played with a Gold 3 the other day. Guy played Nid mid. Kept being caught out of position, went alone in areas with no vision, never warded, roamed all game (thus letting the opposing Zed farm), and in the end blamed us, claiming he "can't carry noobs".

You seem to forget the concept of team. The idea of "carry" is a load of bull because it implies that a team won because of a single person.

lower than that and people just lack personal mechanical skills.

so yeah sure, you can carry with veigar in Silver

but no tank will shield you from a Vi, Malphite or Jarvan.

that's why the "carry" concept exists to signify the champions with either extremely low or no cooldowns (pure ad) that can consistently output enormous damage and have the ability to quickly reposition themselves if needed.

And the common trait shared by those is being much worse in the early game than other champions

now, there's a significant difference of, say, keeping the damage dealer alive compared to keeping a support alive in teamfight

Of course the whole team is working together to win, which doesn't change the fact that once some champions gain power, they are prioritized by both their and enemy team.

Thus, "carrying".
