@AndyProwl Ignoring (for the moment) the fact that all hearing ultimately happens in the brain, so it's all psychological, I don't think tinnitus changing in volume is purely psychological conditioning. Some things can clearly exacerbate it (most obviously listening to loud sounds a lot, but apparently also including other things like diet and accumulation of ear wax).

I'm actually already using a wrapper class that takes the lock in the ctor and releases in the dtor to ensure the lock is properly managed. The real issue is that while the structure of the pattern is common everywhere, the initialization is different, and that's the part I'm having difficulty abstracting. I need a function, and C++98 does not support functions very well...
