My other problem with it, frankly, is that us experts cannot provide any meaningful oversight in countries/communities with known SHITE programming education. Left to fester on their own in their own little SO, misconceptions and crappy practices will breed like so much bacteria. At least on SO proper we can do our part to try to stem the tide -- it's an uphill battle but it helps a bit, right?

AFAIK std::wstring doesn't give that much more than std::string. I'm probably mistaken though.

there's this thing I keep hearing that at least on Windows it's better to use std::wstring, but every time I ran benchmarks on code that was using strings a lot I found it brought some performance penalty
