I need to alter some files to make it allow serial connections via the single usb port

but it may not be possible because apparently you need a USB-OTG cable :(

I'd have to "profile" to find the bottleneck, but I was disappointed to find that the Pi2 struggled just as much as the Pi at doing anything

despite having a much better processor :(

Oh well, maybe by the time we get pi 5 it'll be responsive enough that i wont notice the lag when typing
