For those people who are happy to put down some roots it makes all the sense in the world to purchase rather than rent a property. Unfortunately a huge number of those people simply cannot afford to put up the capital for a mortgage deposit.

For those people who prefer mobility but want to live in a house rather than an apartment, for whatever reason (size? location? parking availability? local factors [e.g. no apartments exist close to work]?), renting makes all the sense in the world. It's just a shame your money is going into a void

The UK government has recently been guaranteeing low-deposit/high-borrowing mortgages to help people get onto the property ladder and get out of rental hell. Even then, it's not for everyone.

@sehe I dunno. I always thought it's more so in Berlin, and others are saying so, too. If I wouldn't have to the south for work, or take the occasional trip to a cinema or a bar to meet friends from other areas, I would hardly ever need to leave Pankow, where I live. Everything is here.

@AlexM. The way the rents went here in Berlin in the last decade, if you have a family with more than three people, paying the mortgage for your own house a bit out of the city is at least not very much more than renting a big enough apartment in the city.

@sbi It's the same even in a medium sized city where I live. I'm in the north part, and I have only been to the city centre like... 5 times in 14 years. And the funny part is, if you look at the map, that "city" itself is really just a nucleus of Rotterdam. There's no gap or "low-urbanization" zone between the places

I remember now. It's from a children's book by Cornelia Funke ("Ink Heart" anyone?) named "Potilla". The title refers to one of the main characters, a kind of fairy, that keeps referring to a twin pair as such. What the fuck. VS2013 is generating AVX/FMA3 instructions without me turning on /arch:avx. It's using a dispatcher to conditionally run it if the processor supports it. But it fails to check if the OS has enabled AVX.

The only thing I don't understand is; why go through all that trouble when even the most simplest of IDEs can do multiple functions, eg; tabbing, code error handling etc? Is it just to look cool using the command line?

@RahulKhosla I think in the beginning it is harder to use VIM and you are probably going to be less productive, however; if you stick to it than you can become faster at producing code than you ever were before. At least that's what I have heard, I recently switched so i can't really say yet.

Btw, having a spare computer is so useful. Now I can totally fuck with different OS's with different settings. That's how I discovered that VS bug involving AVX dispatching.

I'm reading a C++ book right now, and it's from 1995 so I assume this is some older syntax, but I was wondering if this was requirement by the language at that time:

The above is a function prototype, was the void within the parentheses to specify that there were no arguments? Can it still be used in todays code if we chose to?
