I've only got 4GB on my desktop, too, which runs Windows 7 and Chrome and Spotify and Thunderbird and mIRC and two media players and a backup service and a newsgroup indexer and a ton of other stuff, on an SSD, with no problems whatsoever. And barely any swapping. Certainly none that I'd notice.
