If the return type is A& and A is a base class of B then you can return a reference to a B just fine.

you can defer the type check until runtime with a variant or dynamic_cast, but this typically indicates that your design is busted.

I have one `B` and several `A`s, the only difference between them is that `B` does not allow set (so I overload it to just do nothing). But I want to abstract from "access my b, access one of my as".

The only other (nasty) alternative I could think of though was `bool allowSet`...
