It doesn't seem weird to me that you've got to use ImmutableJS syntax everywhere you want to use immutable data structures. Honestly the seamless-immutable approach is what is weird to me.

Let's say I want to parse something, I use immutable DASTs to make the code more readable - once I'm done parsing (or any other unit of work type stuff) - I don't have/need the immutable data @ssube

@BenjaminGruenbaum sure, but ImmutableJS' API (specifically) makes that difficult. It's sufficiently different that consumers need some awareness of it.

There are no consumers, the state isn't exported - it's isolated.

It's like Rx, it works best when used counterintuitively in relative isolation IMO

in complete isolation it might be useful, but... that's not great in real life

@ssube a lot of things that happen happen in complete isolation, that's part of encapsulation. Just not most of the FE code which is generally ultraglobal.

@BenjaminGruenbaum my problem with ImmutableJS is that you can't ever leak a single object it creates

with seamless-immutable or immer you're not constantly calling toJS and wondering why it invoked a seemingly-random method way down your object tree

but ImmutableJS' API is unique enough that you have to keep it 100% hidden

You're a library, others consume you

If you return an immutable object, you force the immutable "language" on the consumer

If you use .toJS() your performance is horrific.

the only way to keep ImmutableJS encapsulated is to call toJS constantly, it's like the GPL of libraries :(

Even if you manage to isolate your "seams" and only call .toJS() when you strictly need to, the performance hit is huge

@MadaraUchiha you don't return an immutable DAST, you just use an immutable DAST internally - for example in TipRanks this might be Pipeline or PortfolioBuilder.

@MadaraUchiha you really don't, let's say you're writing a transformation as a unit of work - you keep an array of functions (or an immutable list), you can execute all of them (that's just forEach and not .toJS()) - but you can't access the old list
