I am seeing that for some reasons
$("#myselect option").last().attr("selected","selected");
is not working.

The following is working
$j("#myselect option:last").attr("selected","selected");

Seems jQuery version issue.

Yes, that's my mistake. When I said $("#myselect option").last().attr("selected","selected"); is not working, Actually I meant $j("#myselect option").last().attr("selected","selected"); is not working.
Latest new is that even $j("#myselect option").pop().setAttribute('selected', 'selected'); isn't working.

Then, in your script which runs for the onLoad, check for the existence of that variable:

if(isPostBack) {
   // do your thing
