The west in general and the US in particular have been targets of anger and hatred in the area since long before invading Iraq (e.g., Iran hostage crisis, in 1979). @Mgetz I'd tend to agree--mostly because most of our "fixes" have been both short sighted, and aimed at relatively narrow targets. For quite a while, the target was simply to minimize the spread of "communism", so we backed pretty much anybody who disliked Russia.
