I want to research the different ways that 3D viewers (like CAD programs, 3D model editors, etc) use controls for rotating, panning, zooming, etc. I'm having trouble using search terms to find already-made comparisons out there. any ideas?

@AlexM. All special effects are a combination of animated simple geometry (+alpha testing) which defines the spatial extent and motion of it and additional texture animation is what creates the dances of light in the stream, usually containing emissive data and stuff.
There are also screenspace effects, but they have issues with occlusion and offscreen data. So usually, the most modern effects will use simple geometry and tessellation to achieve the shape and then invoke the pixel shader on them and process the involved textures, like what lighting pattern (texture) to emit, how to move it by using perframe data etc.
And then you have particle systems which help supplement that, which are nowadays fully simulated on the GPU. Millions of particles augmenting it.
Yeah, there are usually VFX teams dedicated to making those spells look cool. I know ArenaNet has a division, I actually saw it in one of their making of documentaries.
Making magic out of geometry and textures really is a chore. It is also helped by regular postprocessing, high pass then bloom filter, possibly with multiple kernels to make it really pop. All you have to make sure is that it has a lot of energy associated with it (HDR), so that it gets picked up by the high pass.
All serious volumetric effects in games today utilize actual geometry (and especially tessellation). Fallout 4's integrated Nvidia GameWorks volumetrics are based on tessellated geometry as well, making them appear even when the light source is not in an optimal visible position. Postprocess screenspace stuff is usually only for stuff you can cheaply get away with.

At times, I actually thought about publishing it as a website with proper equation rendering. It would enable more dynamic content, but I am so deep right now, it is not worth it.
Only sources for the samples, which are actually going to be sexy and not those shit ones that are usually associated with rendering books. The "this is the basic principle, it's really trivial to go from this to actual production quality" bullshit.
