Yes, another thread could come in and reset src to null or a new value between the opening brace adding of a reference. The ref counting in shared_ptr is itself thread-safe, but the pointer/pointee are not and require a mutex to prevent issues. Consider: std::shared_ptr<int> src( new int(...
