users can post an Alert, so we do have to keep in the DB the User ID associated with an alert, for example

but we do not keep any information such as email or name

but again, since we use Firebase Authentication, I guess one could argue that the app's Firebase Console does have access to the email of a user

but the whole point of the app using Oauth 2 was specifically to avoid treating that kind of data in our DB

in practice as an individual doing almost nothing with personal information and limited assets I don't think anyones going to sue you, it would cost a lot of money and it would be difficult to prove any damages

but generate a free privacy policy to cover your bases

the thing about privacy policies / terms of use agreements they aren't really binding contracts, they can't take away your rights, but they can release you from liability by disclosing legal practices

But it doesn't mean someone can sue you for no reason if you don't do anything to hurt them, just because you don't have a privacy policy

My concern is more like, say I forget that this tiny little piece of useless information is SOMEHOW stored in our DB (or that I didn't know I had to declare it as being saved), and then someone somehow realizes that, reads my privacy policy, and realizes that I didn't disclose it.
Isn't that a solid enough ground for a legal pursuit?

Just storing the information isn't enough to be something you owe them money for

you'd need to do something with that information that violated their personal rights in some way or caused them harm

a generated privacy policy should be enough to protect you even in the worst case scenario, if all you're doing is storing emails

how would you know if the position of a posted alert isn't considering "information about a user" if, somehow, a strang 25 chars string (the UID) identifies this person as being the source of that alert. One could argue that this isn't personnal information.
But then someone could end up having his girlfriend find out that him posting that alert at that precise time at the precise location basically is evidence of him cheating on her with a person (interlacing information from other real-life information to draw conclusions).

If it was medical data, SSNs then you'd want be more careful

it seems like there are many things that could be "personnal data" without looking like it could represent a threat in the first place

email addresses are PII so make sure to comply to the GDPR if you have EU users

If you keep that data private, it's not being disclosed to anyone

so it can't harm them in that scenario
