I've just came from a kind of rough 'n' tumble conversation where people were arguing over the semantics of what happens when you do x = "arf"; y = x;, specifically for y. I've been told it was a copy, but some people insisted it was a reference to the original string. I know strings are immutable, but I don't know what that means in terms of assigning one variable a string from another string variable....

FWIW I'm writing a parser in (a compile-to )Javascript and one of the conditions is that I avoid copies, so. I was curious!

y = x; // copies just the memory address of the string
y = "new string"; //allocates new string in memory and replaces the memory address in y.

It's an implementation detail

JS (and a lot of modern languages) have immutable strings and hold references to them.

That's why string concatenation is discouraged these days.

Back in my day, slapping two strings together was fair game; we did it all the time, you just had to watch your nulls. Those were the times.

So Step 1 is to eliminate copies (use indices to track where tokens in the language are), and then Step 2 is to correct the derps of the implementation.

It might be creating lots of strings. They could be right.

If they were references, y = {} would've changed x as well

If strings were struct { int len; char * str; } then substr could just change the len and pointer to be midway through and it'd all work.
