Any advice on actually hiring or forming a data infra team?

yes!

I think: 1) you want people who worked with data as end users, people who did ETL basically (just a bit large scale) to understand the potential use cases and how data is accessed (from data-analysts/scientists/engineers, bi-tools etc..)

2) you need people with a software engineering background, not ETL engineering, as the latter's main skill sets is around wrangling data and not building tools, which they'll have to build for the entire company
3) people with devops knowledge, aws or GCP or whatever, as they'll be building a platform, lots of rules, roles to manage, interactions between accounts, gdpr management, infrastructure as code etc...

Yeah, that's the general aim - we're looking at getting 2-3 people - one who has experience with large scale ETL system set up and management, one who is slightly more junior but can aid with setting up and maintaining the various feeds into the data system, and potentially one guy purely for BI analysis and reporting if we make it that far

In the near term, the team would handle reporting as well - in the long term, we would likely have a BI/analyst attached to every product team

We need the team to create a data environment from scratch, and pipe in data from everywhere, and then do data things with it

Our current data set up isn't very good, basically just grafana + influx + random scripts

So we're aiming to replace it completely

@RaghavSood nice, then I'd suggest you from now on to enforce a vision: your central team will build the tooling to build pipelines, and maybe the "very important / core" pipelines that report critical data. The rest should be done by the analyst/engineers attached to stakeholders

All three flows are in house, but completely different systems

There isn't really any off the shelf stuff for crypto yet

We do use external accounting software and all for the bank side of things

But crypto has to be done in house at every stage, no other options
