So... you can have <item="attr">@style/otherStyle</item>

And things in otherStyle don't work if on the higher level

ah yup

(This might be at the level of textAppearance - trying now)

It's hard because I know this is part of the set "textAppearance" but things like textSize are too - but they work at this level without overriding textAppearance

I think it's something to do with the inheritance of the more common attributes
