@NikiC So... let's say I have abstract class AbstractEnumerable with method filter which uses private method build. This is totally made up and any relation to real code is totally coincidental.

It doesn't seem that build will get inlined into filter.

I figured it would. It's not a trait and private methods are inherently final. What else am I missing?

Let's pretend it looks like this. Do any of those features preclude inlining?

$this->newBuilder() is definitely a virtual method call, but that shouldn't prevent build from being inlined, right?

What about variadics?

type declarations in particular are somewhat non-trivial to handle

you can spot the cases where the check can be eliminated

what's difficult is where it can't be

because you'd need to carry the context somehow

@Andrea The harder cases are probably where the type declaration does type chuckling, e.g. passing an exception to a method accepting string.

@bwoebi It fails installing an update from 2014 for PHP 7.1, weird.

if that happens, it has to be handled

particularly difficult is throwing a contextual error though (we have to know we're in inlined_func() despite actually being in function_that_called_inline_func())

if it's just a cast, that's easier
