Also it had poor resolution.

So they decided to make it so the Varia Suit had huge shoulders in order to visually distinguish it from the Power Suit.

When Super Metroid came out, they merged both designs: huge shoulders and orange color.

And from then on it stuck.

And in any case it's iconic: nobody else has an armor that looks like that. It's like Link's green hat. It's instantly recognizable.
