Absolutely. Culture is how you retain people. Tech stack helps contribute to culture. If you have a shit ton of systems running on legacy versions of java with no plan in sight for upgrade, you pobably have a lot of older developers that specialize in legacy java systems and such contribute to an older, outadted culture.

@BrianJ I'm on a team right now where everyone's eager to learn and every other PR has interesting discussions about everything from HTML semantics to how to optimize code or make use of new ES features.

@ndugger i think i have the a desire like that too. i'm in a position that has the potential to have meaning, but i'm not nearly as skilled or productive as i could be to fulfill that potential

Gotcha. Working on a customer-facing project gives me that. I try my best to help push the code towards something that is accessible to everyone wether they're blind or on a shitty mobile connection. I like that better than working with internal apps.

i sortof... went through this period of time a few years ago where i felt that way. I was looking for a way out, a change, something to grow my career... but the reality is you have the power to make that change yourself. you don't need a change of employment for that, that's all on you. (though, a change of employment/location can certainly force the point, but it may just end up being temporary)

If you can get a work permit, we're quite short on programmers in Norway

@BrianJ I started a company where I freelance on my own. It brings meaning to the random shit I do on my spare time, I get to choose my own techs and I'm actually making stuff that people use. It's way more fun that just making random stuff noone will ever use. Or I guess seek out an open-source project where there's a bit of community to bounce ideas off of.

Or just shop around for a new job and try to find a team where people inspire you

You said you lived in London once and from what I've seen there seems to be a very thriving tech community there with lots of meetups and stuff happening
