Hey. I've never done serious web development before and I was wondering. This whole Angular/Ember frontend thing. Do these frameworks replace some of the functionality of a backend? For example, can Angular or Ember talk to a database directly (like ElasticSearch or Mongo), get values from a database, and put those values into the web page without a web server?

if the project has requirement similar to already present framework, then you should opt for a framework.

Frameworks are nothing but bunch of libraries like inbuilt components, inbuilt api calls, inbuilt dependency injections, inbuilt utility functions and lots more

@Sheepy - I am not aware that my requirements were similar to an already present framework. The way I did it in my prototype is I had a template for every page and that template had a body and a header. When the user went straight to the page, they got the whole thing loaded (body and header). When they clicked a link, JQuery just got the body and replaced the existing body with the new body and changed the URL using pushState/popState to make it look like it was a whole new page.

But the header stayed the same.

There were no page refreshes except for the first page.

I agree with Mr_Green. Frameworks are not silver bullet. You need a backend, in any language. Doesn't really matter which at your stage, just find a tutorial site you are happy with and stick with it until you get it done.

If your requirement is "attract users", technical implementation is the least of your worries.

The thing is, I don't even know if a javascript framework will be beneficial. I mean if it messes up search engine optimization I don't want it. And if the only benefit is to be able to provide JSON instead of HTML so that the same backend can be used for both an iPhone app and also a web page, I don't want that either.

there are pros and cons for each framework. You must decide based on your requirements. If you are unable to decide then don't use any. Go with JavaScript/jQuery.

The best software book I have ever read is "Two Scoops of Django". "The Mythical Man Month" gives classic advice like "make a prototype to throw away, and then grow software gradually", but the Djengo books actually gives modern advice like how to best use a logger for a system with multiple modules, how to debug, etc.
