I only shave when my parents come to visit and I want something from them

they don't like seeing me with hair all over my face

except for the actual shaving, which seems to primarily involve a cheesegrater.

and having to shave regularly effectively means having a permanently cheesegrated face, which I am even less happy with than having a beard/moustache.

Don't press so hard. Don't press at all. One slow stroke. Rinse very often - the trapped stubble is the worst culprit for damage.

I asked my hairdresser about whether I'd get a better result with the old-fashioned cut-throat razors that he seemed to handle like a freakin' butter knife. He went pale and suggested I don't try.

If I ever actually shave clean, I pre-shave with my beard trimmer to minimum length, and then go over it with a disposable razor (5-bladed, though).

anyway, I'm perfectly happy to invest, really, I just want to be able to shave without destroying my skin.

I tried the new Mach 3 recently, which is being saturation0advertised at the moment as guaranteed not to cause redness. I found it to be distinctly better than I remember, and I remember them being good in the first place. If I rinsed and was gentle...

I have a rechargeable Philips. I find the rotary cutters better than the reciprocating, linear ones.

@Puppy When it comes to safety razor, they’re essentially a big metallic handle. I doubt money can give you anything else than aesthetics. Disposable/cartridge razors I have no clue.

I've never liked wet shavers. They're too difficult to use in traffic jams or at lights. The foam gets all over she seats and my hand slips on the controls.

also - after a hot shower (softens the shizzle). Those old fashioned brushes also really help to ... stimulate something as you fluff up the cream, and make it more effective

I usually tend to avoid alcohol-based products, though I once had this weird aftershave lotion from Gillette which I think was alcohol based

And I don’t like mentol in general.

I'm not sure if the pain it caused was because of that

but after a while the sensation was really refreshing

@Puppy In the last year or so I've used a brush with a kind of old-school soap-stick. I wet the face, scrape the stick across to leave a bit of crap, then fluff it up with the brush

an alcohol-based aftershave is just a crude kind of disinfectant. If you don't do damage, that's less of an issue

my current aftershave is some soft Nivea stuff

it doesn't hurt, does its job I guess, but it does stick to the skin a bit too much

Do you get Solvol, or is that an aussie product? I used it in the shower for a long time! Chicks pay big money for grainy soaps that exfoliate. This costs much less. And of course you smell like a bloke.

@Puppy yeah - but only on the hairy/smelly bits. Also I've used a thing called Palmolive gold which promises to be like a deoderant soap. I rarely need deoderant and I never smell rank.

There's a mad scientist type guy on australian youth radio, he tells everyone as often as he can that you should only use sorbeline/glycerol and only on the face and hairy/smelly bits. Apart from teh product, that made me change to directly soaping much less skin.

there's a bunch of products here but nothing to particularly tell them apart.
