@AlexM. I've been thinking about it, and I think the real problem with Call of Duty isn't as much as it is scripted or linear, but that all enemies are the same kind of enemy (humans with guns) and all weapons function similarly (hitscan weapons).

Which means all combat encounters end up feeling the same.

But the problem with those is that they are just short lived gimmicks that are tacked on the rest of the game.

In the end, your average Call of Duty campaign feels like Mario Party.

Crysis 2 was great fun. The somewhat open ended level design that reward experimentation and improvisational tactics? Great.

It's a game that let me build actual fucking plans, and then scramble about when they failed.

in a way BP also has concepts that you can find in more recent FPSes

I really recommend it, you'll find many bits that you now find in modern FPS

I think the game was so broken at release because the devs really wanted to do a lot in the game, so they didn't have time to polish it

you've got full fledged faction wars in the open world with quests and all that, vehicles are pretty realistic with damage and fuel that's limited and so on

it's actually more RPG-y than I remembered it hmm
