it's a bad-guy role where basically, you kill someone and then take their place.

Yeah, Trespasser is commonly used as an example of Really Damn Good LP

(also from SA)

so if one of the Town investigates them, and they are clean, then you take their place, people will think you are now clean, or that you have a certain role.

so disguising can be a very powerful mechanic, if you can pass off yourself as the previous owner of that identity.

I imagine that can be difficult.

most people in the game have never played with any others before, never will again, and the names are all anonymized at the start anyway so you don't even know who the other guy is.

many of them are improvements or variants on custom maps for Warcraft 3, which itself had many that were improvements or variants on custom maps for Brood War.
