I have entered an answer to an old question with an accepted answer. However, I believe my new answer is superior. I looked on meta for how to deal with this and it suggested promoting it externally.

Any advice for anyone who has dealt with this?

@Xeo I really don't know how (un)common it is in Germany. Here in the US it's fairly common, especially with startups (easy for a company that's not worth anything to hand out options that might someday be worth something, but only if/when the company is successful).
