@JAL The default image insertion gives you something like [![image][1]][1]. You can change that to [![image][1]][2], then duplicate the link for [1] to [2], shrink the displayed image by adding 'm' to the name for [1], AND add a tooltip by appending (click to enlarge) after the link for [1].

Best would be to get an official answer from the person in charge of stack roadmap, and why they don't want to try this path. But I don't know how to contact them, since it's a feature mostly for new users not existing one, it's hard to engage.
