author probably means that you can go "south" in uncountably infinite directions from the north pole

but you're still starting off from the same point...

if you're at a latitude where "going 1 mile east" will take you around the north pole, you're safe

and of these points there are again uncountably many

find the latitude where a circle around the north pole is 1 mile long, then go 1 mile north, and hope that it's not past the north pole

but it WILL work around the south pole
