1) HTML has never ever imposed a case requirement for anything, ever, but it does say that certain attributes are case sensitive 2) XHTML, by virtue of being XML-based, is case sensitive on everything

I think. I don't know if it actually required uppercase for tags back in the SGML days or if that was just the unwavering convention back then xD

Speaking of CSS, the interaction with CSS selectors is what you'd expect too

Type selectors match element names case-insensitively in HTML, case-sensitively in XHTML
