So mysql was killed. How does that explain the full system unresponsiveness? Isn't the death of mysql supposed to prevent an issue like that?

The OS may have killed ssh previously an an attempt to avoid this

Your log doesn't really go back for too long, so it is hard to say if other stuff was killed prior to this
