I got the ipa (and a few other files) from the guy who has been the main developer on this app for the last few months. I thought he'd give me the right thing

the ipa is the right thing, it came with a big disclaimer that it's built for devices and your mileage my vary

if you build a release configuration for the simulator I think it generates a .app file in your build directory

and you can manually run that and start the simulator using the command line
