Free Advice: Don't overload yourself. I went to every single hackathon in my first semester. I was on-campus for 3 weekends. In the entire semester. In addition to working two campus jobs. And 18 credits. Don't do it. Do your classes, go to a couple of hackathons, work 5-10 hours. Enjoy the rest of your time with friends, chill, get a girlfriend, whatever. If you try to do too much, you'll burn out.

im using a static factory constructor for database access like in the google samples

what I meant is that "document.getElementsByClassName('container')[0].style.display='none';" should be right before "</body>" otherwise if it's on the "<head>" or before the "<div class="container">", the element to hide won't be existing yet and therefore the js will be interpreted but it won't hide it
