Depth of light is not physical, probably one of the mistakes people make. Layering and gaussian convolution. The physics of DoF don't translate well to game engines.

Still have issues with foreground bleeding into the background though, mostly far field only for sexiness.

All production renderers (both CPU and GPU) are basically stochastic in nature, so it is almost never the real deal. :D

That's the only chance you've got of evaluating the integrals in the time you're alive :D

The basis for the stochastic-based rendering is actually from the Manhattan Project and the development of the nuclear bomb.

Because the things that happen in one nanosecond around us couldn't be adequately processed by all the computers on the planet.

But fake stuff can look good. I like the gamey look. Photorealism (actual photorealism, not what publishers say is photorealistic) would be disturbing in a game like GTA.
