For me, it's mostly that I believe there is a ceiling for how much other people can be happy for you, beyond which any conversation about that is bound to go sour. And I believe that ceiling is reached when the person you're talking to has a yearly income which is only 50% more than what you paid for your computer upfront a few months ago.

@Lalaland The UK doesn't qualify under your criteria though. In fact, that page says the UK minimum wage is about 11% higher than the US'. At least IMO, that's effectively equal--I think the "noise" level in a PPP calculation exceed 11% (probably by a good margin--even I restrict it to "within California", I don't think it can be calculated to that level of accuracy).
