I have a formatting function that takes a format string and a variable number of arguments, however not all options in the format string are valid with all passed types

if the format string is known at compile time I'd like to static_assert that no invalid options are passed for the given types

Your first mistake is inheriting the format string from printf

You already know the types at compile time, there's really no reason for you to have to specify the type again in the string.

It's redundant and quite frankly silly.
