I think the advantage of writing a string class is not "knowing how the built-in strings work," but "knowing how to write your own data structure."

Because the standard library isn't going to contain every single data structure you'll ever need, so being able to implement your own is an important exercise.

If you kinda know what you are doing, it certainly is worth looking into. Heck, I got 20x speedup out of a complete program just by floating point tweeks.
But don't let people use it as an excuse for the language abuse that's going on. It's harmful.

@NobodyNada That's a very hard problem, even for highly paid professionals. Microsoft has yet to solve that. (See std::vector<foo> v = something; v.push_back(v.front());.)

@QPaysTaxes I strongly disagree. Even C++ is too weird and low-levely for beginners. Teach them to read the docs and use standard library stuff first.

Maybe Python or something like that.

@QPaysTaxes I read The C++ Programming Language in its entirety, then I started coding bad stuff (which I expected) and got experienced programmers to critique it.

I also read cppr to get to know all standard library functions, and yet most of what I wrote in my first 2 years of programming was terrible. It would have been way worse had I tried anything "low level".
