In all seriousness though, there wasn't a Windows 9. What you see advertised as "Windows 10" is what we've been working hard on for some time now. Version names aren't always contiguous though; remember when we went from Windows 3 to Windows 95, then popped over into "Vista", etc :)

hey wouldn't have surprised me. That's bizarre though, I understand going from 95 -> Vista because you are using a different naming convention but to just skip a version number? Feels odd...

was there any sort of reasoning behind it? Or just "Windows 9 doesn't sound right"?

If a Netscape-style death means a Firefox-style rebirth, then that isn't such a bad thing :)

I think it's cool how Mosaic is really the winner in all of this today; Firefox and IE both find their roots in it.

I don't know much about the history of Chromium; but it may have been heavily influenced by Mosaic too.

It's silently out-living us all :)

To be fair, Windows CMD supports copy/paste, but not in an intuitive way. Then again, copying and pasting in terminals has always been voodoo.

The larger buttons and stuff are definitely engineers with touch in mind.

It's rough today because laptops are increasingly becoming tough-friendly, which is difficult for engineers who have to design UIs. Do you make it larger when touch is detected? Or do you make it smaller, anticipating people to use a stylus or mouse on the touch-enabled device.

Either way, you're burning somebody.

My install of 7 is getting to the point where I need to reinstall

I'd prefer simplification (though I know that isn't as profitable a business model); Desktop ultimate and Touch ultimate

My main question is: MS hinted with 8 that it would be the last version with 32-bit. Windows 9 10 will have 32-bit. Will it be the last?

@TylerH I've been running Windows 10 for months ;) I primarily want it to be affordable for my friends and family. I don't want to have to buy it for all of them :D

Even on Newegg's black friday deals the Windows OSes don't fall below about $99

I installed Windows 7 from a thumb-drive; don't recall any serious problems.

It was the only way I could get it on my tablet(s) at the time.

@SomeKittens funny story. when I got my kudu laptop with ubuntu on it, I wanted to swap the HDD for my SSD. I also opted for no cdrom, and a drive caddy. what did I do? yea, I burned an ubuntu cd. like a tool.

Though I probably won't play with the beta. Don't have the time to be a free beta tester anymore

I will definitely be on the lookout for the preview

It won't have a finished product; not of Windows or IE. We're still in the process of building both, but by download you get to be part of the effort to ensure the final products are far better than we can make then on our own.

Yeah I started playing RS when I was about 8

It was weird because it was definitely after everything was loaded

and it was consistently on that page and not others which share 3rd party libs

@WesleyCrushed Ah, I couldn't comment honestly. I spend most of my time doing JavaScript; I've only poked at Flexbox curiously a few times. A buddy on my on staff is the internal PM in charge of our implementation. He's pretty excited about it :)

so the story is that i'm not happy about it. don't get me wrong it's massively better than any css2 alternative, but i spent a lot of time on it and i feel it's not satisfying enough, it has a couple of important problems. i was trying to get through someone who is involved with its developing and throw some some inputs but i'm lazy :D and getting attention on www-style is very tough (especially for me, since i never used newsgroups in my life)
