I hate stupid database abstractions…

When I do save() I want the stupid code to actually do a save and not wait for a commit whose transaction I've never manually initiated…

I don't have any articles in front of me, but I'll suffice to say that most larger products I've worked on have eventually used this to separate concerns at an organizational level. Even though it's the same machine, it does make it much easier on humans to separate out these kinds of concerns, rather than to jam them all under one roof. Basically, would you rather have 1 DB with 500 tables, or 20 DBs with 45 tables? Some might even say that is too many, but I am not them.

Thanks for the advice, I'll definitely look into it further. I'm doing a minor database cleanup (early days in the project) so if I was going to take this approach now is a good time to switch.
