@milleniumbug a variable that keeps track of how many potatoes you have available could be called numPotatoes; by this analogy, I was looking for a good name for a function that would have the aforementioned functionality

@milleniumbug I am not assigning a value; the function which I need a name for assigns an identifier if one wasn't provided (hence a "default" identifier)

Think of the spec as : Pre-condition: argument may have a name; Post-condition: argument definitively has a name.

@ScarletAmaranth really sounds like you're in a hard place because you care about the name of unnamed things. Just give them a unique identification and don't pretend they have proper names

the function is unknownNameSoFar :: (Type, Maybe Identifier) -> (Type, Identifier) (not quite, but you get the jist)

@Puppy I don't use it in internal representation; I do end up generating some code that should be user readable, and I would like to have idiomatic names for unnamed things
