Reading a float would require reading 4 bytes per pixel.

This is 1 byte per pixel.

And they've rigged the system to make it prefer THEM as the premiere renderer.

Here, it tops out at OpenGL 4.1, tho. But with Metal, I can't give too much of a crap anymore. Expecting Apple to introduce Metal 2 with the necessary support for geometry shaders and other stuff that's missing. Most mobile GPUs are actually spec'd for DX11+ nowadays, it's simply a stupid decision keeping everything on par, feature set wise.
