Yeah, but I'm hiding all access to the native resource inside the object. It's never visible outside the black box ... I wish I didn't have to allow an accessor method so that the underlying resource could be manipulated outside the wrapper object.

Obviously, exposing an accessor method is no different than exposing the numerical resource ID and extrapolating that out to the relevant resource, but it seemed nicer than saying, "here's your underlying resource, do whatever you want with it."

If you are studying the basics of OOP, then there are few (extremely few) lectures and book about the subject. And if you are studying advanced concepts, you begin using language agnostic materials, which have nothing to do with php.
