I've been submitting close quotes on many off-topic questions in the postfix and postfix-mta tags; if anyone is looking for a good way to spend their close votes, there's a mountain of off-topic votes there

@Lankymart I don't understand that dupe. One is about reading text files using the FileSystemObject, the other is about reading binary files with ADODB.Stream. Seems pretty different to me. Solution is also not applicable.

@ErikvonAsmuth Unfortunately, it's not as simple as that, should have flagged as Not Clear or Too Broad. They may be trying to read the file using FSO doesn't mean they should be, the impression is the file is binary. But it's wholly unclear anyway.

@AndréKool it's a really basic take first 4 chars for the start of a string, just couldn't find a dup that fit it well enough.

@Lankymart Ah, I agree with unclear. If they're reading a binary file with FSO.OpenTextfile, then they're lost anyway. Unclear/No MCVE fits better.

Who thinks this question was incorrectly dupehammered? Question seems similar enough but answer completely different, OP states existing answers didn't help. OP ended up posting his answer on the dupe target, but it seems a bit out of place to me.

@MichaelDodd I think it's fine, just because the existing answers didn't answer his question doesn't mean that it's not a duplicate, on top of that if the question were re-opened it should just be closed as no longer repro. (not having a working cable? who's that going to help?)

@TylerH It wasn't that there weren't ROs around. It's just that from time-to-time a single like of words gets missed during a periods of high activity.

@rene I have observed many hour-long periods (or longer) during the day where no RO seems to be active or binning completed requests.

If there is interest in people looking to become ROs then we can do that whole process.

Also I do see on occasion people misusing/abusing the cv-pls process

sometimes I or another person will comment but often times the offending requests are not moved by ROs or addressed.

It is not common, but it is also not something that is a one-off

I guess the latter part of that is up to the discretion of each individual RO, though.

@TylerH While there is some automatic checking, a considerable amount of abuse detection relies on people visiting the post. I've intended to add additional checking, but haven't completed it. Sam has bots, which are quite helpful.

If someone posts a duplicate of an unanswered question and I answer the original, should I hammer close the new one as a duplicate of the original? I answered the original as it was better overall than the new now duplicate

Note: the OP agrees the answer to the duplicate answers their question

@CamiloTerevinto There are some who voiced concern but the majority IIRC had no issue with conflicts because as a gold-badge holder you are supposed to be a subject matter expert and thus would both 1) know what the (best) answer is, and 2) implicitly, therefore, be able to provide the best answer

@CamiloTerevinto Closing to a question you've answered is normally not at all an issue. The issue that's be brought up on Meta is when you appear to be doing it with a motivation of pointing people to your answer, rather than pointing people to the best Q&A. When brought up on Meta, it's usually been something where there's more than one possible dup-target and where there's a pattern of the user choosing question's they have answered without regard to the quality of other potential duplicates.

@CamiloTerevinto I'd also note that it's normal to be much more familiar with questions questions which you've answered than other possible dup-targets (i.e. you're more likely to select them as a dup-target). As @TylerH mentioned, you, with a gold-badge, are expected to be an expert in the tag and to have answered a large number of questions. For you to not have given answers to questions which are, from time-to-time, used as dup-targets would be unusual, even more so in low-traffic tags.

@YvetteColomb (1) Yes, I think it has been very well handled by SO, Tim Post's work has been great - diplomatically handling the biggest "noes" while reminding everyone that being a bit friendlier isn't a terribly onerous request. (2) for anyone who wishes to close, downvote and delete in a firm way for the benefit of quality, without any unkindness, not much changes.
