R is still a single generic type, it can be used before it's defined as long as it's defined at all.

in simple terms, they are boundaries

Nope.. just opened an Netbeans project

This is default in IntelliJ. It looks the same for me and I actually like it more than the vast variety of colors eclipse had when I left it.

blue for numbers but that's it

Oh and purple for some other things like final vars in lambdas and attributes of classes.
