Even though they have a waterfall approach planning releases and the promised content half a year in advanced and get upset when we fail delivery because we're understaffed

waterfall approach is widely considered a bad approach

though you probably don't have any say-so in that

our technical adviser at my old job had us rewrite the CString library (we called it TString) because he thought he could make it faster

I also mind that they say stuff like "It's ok to work from home" but if you do they get angry. You can be super productive working from home, but they treat you like you had a day off despite attending the meetings through phone/skype/other and were constantly available

fast forward 6 months later and deeply behind schedule, we finally managed to make a TString that was both buggy and inconsistent

Then you come to the office and roll your thumbs all day and you get treated like you're a hard working person

I have issues with that

I'm a consultant, this is an assignment. Had this been a job I would have quit with my 14 days notice the first month

we have one of the few jobs that can be almost 100% done remotely and most people can't simply accept that we can be just as productive if not more

I'm actually a bit upset about that this assignment makes me shun my actual job; working with an extremely poorly written legacy system. I don't mind that task, but I mind that they expect me and a fresh junior to do a 6 man team job

I can deal with people saying what they mean in weird ways

I'm actually kinda good at that

I'm not good at "I want you do do X" and they they get upset that I didn't do the rest of the alphabet

This job is all about the execution.. if we were supposed to be factory workers, then they could tell us "Do X, Y, and then Z"

but that's precisely what we're being paid for

I agree 100%. When my boss tells me to use this library in order to reduce latency speeds, he's not letting me do my job properly

I've always thought of it like we're in a technological world that most people don't see or understand. IT can see perfectly and are the best guides.

When the boss ignores advice and says to march through the obstacle ahead (say, a river), you're ignoring solutions like building a boat or finding a better crossover point

There are good devs in the team. Especially one Senior dev who's constantly backing me up and have constructive arguments with me.

I know that isn't true, I'm better than the ones who originally wrote this application, but I still FEEL that way

The deadline is the 25th of May. I'm just holding on raking in the money for my firm atm

@eFox Don't "sacrifice" for your company. I'm sure your company would agree that if it meant burning out, they'd just reassign you elsewhere instead

also, it's called Imposters Syndrome and it's so common it has a name

Programmers feeling like they're not as good as the others, to the extreme where they think they're almost faking the role

you're a programmer if that is what you do for a living, bottom line

and no programmer always knows the answer no matter what

@Neil In my case it's just plain burnout. I don't feel like an impostor, I just feel useless and incompetent

@eFox I've known friends who have burnt out and never wanted to so much as think about programming ever again

I do think we'd all end up like that if we pushed despite being burnt out

I believe so too, but there's not much I can do without a doctor's permit saying I AM burnedout. I have a one month resignation time and then it's already end of April which means it's just 1 month left to reach the goal

And then I kinda feel like I want to finish what I started
