on the bright side, we might actually want to do the same setup at work now

we are looking for some king of scripting functionality, allowing our (advanced) users to be able to configure stuff

and we might just go with the same isolated scripting environments that I used for Wietbot, which provide the users with one of the common programming languages while retaining a safe environment

The idea is the same, I guess - containarization

Docker = "here are tools so you can build your own environment"
AWS Lambda = "we pick one standard that everyone will use"

Beside the obvious almost monopoly, it's not open and docker could restrict docker hub limits even further at any time they choose.

I'm just trying to understand others' people problems with Docker. I'm using Docker for couple of years already, started from scratch and don't have any problems whatsoever

On Windows, when I'm working with Docker I'm using only Docker desktop

well, plus git cli but that's for svc

and even now, just trying to compose and run a simple docker container on a windows machine is just annoying as hell

Why is that?

Is the compose file having a lot of related containers?

last time I had to use it, I needed a docker container to build my project with runtime optimization for linux machines

for whatever stupid reason you need to build it on a linux machine in the first place baffles me

Yes, Docker DOES NOT work like a virtual machine

I remember reading about some problems people were having when trying to spin up some linux containers on Windows

eventually, it turned out I didnt even need to run it

I mean, I usually just go right click -> create docker file and visual studio populates a template for me, maybe add some files myself the template doesn't know, and it just works. Would still be nice to have a solution not owned by a single copmany.

and the same goes other way around, but that's just the nature of containers vs virtual machine

building actually already uses the runtime I needed, so my Dockerfile actually does the build of my project :D

For me Docker helps when I'm checking out new stuff, i.e. RabbitMQ

There's no need for me to install the whole thing + related libraries

Just pull the image, forward ports and done - 5 minutes work

when I build my "hello world" program, I expect the executable to be a pre-defined sequence of bytes

I don't.

the output would differ if I build it for windows or linux, but I should be able to generate both on one machine

The executable might call internal system functions that are implemented differently in different systems

basically, I wanted to try Kotlin Native, but in order for me to use the HttpClient, I need to add the curl library if I want to build for linux target runtime

the kotlinc (compiler) allows me to do cross compilation
