I'm guessing (hoping) Cath is sleeping now. For starters you're missing a leading ".*?". Otherwise the front part of the text is not matched, and hence not subbed.

gsub(".*?(\\d{1,})/.*$", "\\1", "Some text 1 37/8\n")
