My conclusion was the overly simple title would cause confusion to new users, also incoming from Google, where the simple answer would generally be using d.pop(). I prefer your title edit #7 "Delete key from dictionary without modifying the original to return a copy". Can you roll that back?

I would keep it as is. This is one of those questions where the needs of the greater good trump OP's needs. But you're welcome to roll it back.
