@user5444075 what does number of features have anything to do with vanishing gradients? no, vanishing gradients depend on "something else". I'd recommend reading some blog posts or articles to figure out what exactly.

Essentially, training of neural networks is via backpropagation, which is essentially chain rule. the deeper the network, the smaller the gradient gets from last layer towards first.

The simplest way to think of it is this: neural networks cant solve an equation in one go, the equations are too complex. So, they rely on "tweaking" the prediction made at a time. This "tweaking stage" is called backpropagation. The tweaking of a weight requires figuring out which "direction" you want to tweak in, hence the gradient.

the most common activation functions are sigmoids. so, the steepest gradient is 0.25 with that (iirc). Since this is going to be a component of "how much should i tweak", the value is always being scaled down

I heard about 'pandas-profiling' package and ran it on my validation dataset, it ran for an hour, forgot to save the results. Then ran it again, after four hours I realized it's running on my training dataset, which 800K rows and 217 features. 5 hours 20 mins in now and 100% utilization
