Why do heading tags have a large top margin typically? My first thought is that it's to force more space than a typical break between paragraphs would allow (collapsed margins ensuring the break is not too large). But then why do h1 tags usually have a top margin by default? Any ideas or insight into the history of why this was established as a norm in browsers?

@JosephMarikle I suspect it's because h tags are semantically meant to head (surprise) new sections of content. In the case of h1 this could even mean you should only use it once per page in some cases. In order to show distinction between semantically different sections of content, the h tags having padding to provide space, similar to the difference between a p tag and a br tag.

@JosephMarikle @mikedidthis My suspicion is that it's just for readability purposes. It's easier to tackle tasks when they are broken up into discrete pieces. Same for content; its' easier to read a page of 5 paragraphs than a page of one long one.

BUT that is only on the front page. on a landing page the title is most important, so the page title turns into an h3, the blog title an h1, and the headings in the post as h2's

So in summary, It is probably best for browsers to render them similarly for consistency sake. I don't think there is anything in the W3C that specifically states there should only be one. It's in order of importance, so if you have to equally important headings (just a hypothetical) they could coexist as siblings. This isn't practical, however because of search engines, screen readers, etc. I could be wrong about all that, but it does at least make sense why browsers opt for consistency.

@JosephMarikle Personally I don't think it has anything to do with SEO, I presume its a design choice. Web pages were just text orientated markup, so margins were needed.

@mikedidthis I've always kind of seen collapsing margins as a minimum speed limit kind of thing; take the highest value and make sure at least that much margin is applied. Obviously that's a bit excessive as there will never be more than the highest value applied; that would be paradoxical.

@SomeGuy the sad thing is, that's about how comprehensible much of the documentation on CSS is on the web.
