In React, when setting the state, I often see that the previous state is passed into the state with a spread operator before setting the actual values (...prevState), why is that so? I remember reading an article that talked about it but can't find it again.

the new state is formed from the old state and your adjustments

in the react I use (which is not react-js, so it might be different for that) the state is not altered, it is replaced
