If this is the schema migration question, I think simple is the rigth asnwer for SomeKittens

his app is internal, not somethign where end users will be upgrading their databases. That rules out the need for some of the more complex solutions.

If you don't have some sort of build script, you (and more importantly, other people) can't reliably build the code exactly the same way every time.

It's absolutely critical if you want some kind of CI build, and a really good idea if you want to run tests and lint every time.

Writing raw JS by hand has nothing to do with it though

A build step makes sense in most contexts, but it's not a problem of whether you write raw JS or not

more importantly, if I can't git clone; build and have tests run and pass, then as far as I'm concerned, it doesn't work and I won't be using it in prod.

Not having tests is similar to using undefined behavior. Maybe it looks like it works for now, but nobody knows what will happen tomorrow, and you're going to end up screwed.

Exactly, you choose to think it doesn't work because you have expectations. That does not mean it does not. But I understand why you wouldn't use such ting.

Having 90% coverage, which is fairly impressive, is a very good reason to prefer that code over other options.

There is a big difference between one library that has 'decent but not 100% coverage', a build process to package in various formats and another library that's just some .js files in a pile.

You have to draw a line for practicality, depending on how important the application is (if it's flight control, then it should have 100% coverage). 90% is safely above that for most purposes.

Not having any tests, or even a build script, makes it seem like you just don't care if it works and is a good indication that it probably won't.

When we started requiring tests (and never-decreasing coverage) here, a lot of our contractors went from delivering "working" features the next day to taking a week or so, but we saved so much time in QA.

@ssube when working in node, you often restart it, often using some tool like nodemon, during development. Of course, you have linting tools and the likes, but not always before running the code

see, I've never liked that workflow. Especially with node's load time, I'd rather run something and restart the server.
